The Defenders

The Defenders. This has definitely been a long time coming. I’m not really even sure how to start this post off. I mean, this is what we have been waiting for since April of 2015 with the first season of Daredevil. We’ve seen all four characters appear and each has gotten their own series. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The latter of which was the weakest. And that kind of made me a bit scared for this 8-episode miniseries. The other three shows, I thought, were very good. I think the strongest series has been Daredevil so far.

But now we’re finally here for The Defenders. For one, I was very glad to hear that this miniseries would only be 8 episodes long. That was a very smart move by Netflix/Marvel. All of the other shows have certainly felt just a tiny bit too long. But even in certain areas, The Defenders did as well for me. It takes a little too long for our heroes to finally meet up with one another and get the action going. We get – oh this will probably be a spoiler heavy post by the way – we get one scene with Danny and Luke fighting early on, which was actually pretty cool. It was nice seeing all of the characters on the same show even if they weren’t literally on screen together early on. The set up I thought was okay, it didn’t pull me in like I thought it might or could have.

Sigourney Weaver as Alexandra ended up being a bit of a disappointment for me. I didn’t find her all that menacing or threatening, and I didn’t really understand her motivation or what she wanted. Then, as soon as they killed her I knew fans were gonna be pissed. They pulled this same move with Cottonmouth in Luke Cage. People were not happy about that. So I’m sure people will not be happy about this. To see Elektra being the big bad, I guess, made a little more sense. Still not sure whether she’s dead or not. If Matt survived that crumbling building, there’s no reason Elektra couldn’t have survived as well.

Oh speaking of the last scene, I love that they will be bringing in Matt’s mom for season 3 of Daredevil. It’s a great sort of cliffhanger, and I like where all of our heroes are at the end of this. Iron Fist has taken Matt’s place, it would be so cool if he wore the Daredevil suit but they probably won’t go that far. It would also be cool if Danny was in the first episode of the 3rd season, but again, doubt they will actually go that far.

The fight scenes I thought…were better than they were in Iron Fist at least. There were definitely some cool team up moments in the fight sequences. Mostly between Danny and Luke, if we’re being honest. It would have been nice if they had mixed it up a bit. More of Matt with Danny, more of Jessica with Danny. But it’s whatever I guess.

I actually hope they make Danny a little more powerful in the second season of Iron Fist. Like both of his fists glowing instead of just one, or make his one fist more powerful.

One of the absolute best moments, if not the best moment, was when Misty finally got her arm cut off. I was not expecting it and it was everything. It was so exciting, I couldn’t believe that they actually went ahead and did it. I figured they may save it for season 2 of Luke Cage, but nope, I would have been wrong.

The fourth episode where they’re all together in the Chinese restaurant was pretty great, too. The action scene in the corporate building prior to this was also excellent. Nice use of source music. The scene where Danny and Luke talk, in episode 3, is also very good stuff. These are just my random thoughts.

Another season of The Defenders in the future? Eh, I’m not so sure. I think I could go either way, with it or without it. Like I said before, this series didn’t completely blow me away, but it was entertaining to watch. I guess nothing will hit like that first season of Daredevil.

    Tell me something!
